I just wanted to say that as an animation student, this post and your post on charging a client are eye openers with regards to a career in animation. I also took the opportunity to read an interview in which you said that it helps to cultivate other interests so you can fall back on them as a means of supporting yourself. I will definitely make sure my friends who are about to or are already starting their post-college careers in animation read these posts. Thank you.

It's interesting to note that the union headquarters was located at 200 Riverside Drive. That's not exactly Manhattan Central. No wonder they had to meet at the Capitol Hotel. It also, I'm sure, kept members away on a daily basis. Ultimately, they moved downtown to 45th Street (if I remember correctly) and sth Ave and were harassed by members like me.

I'm not sure if you are pro or anti Zooey but it's a funny cartoon, even funnier if you drew it.
I'm sure it's not on purpose but it's unclear who's saying it, which makes it funnier still.

Good points. I'm not often in the position of bidding the way you do, so a lot of what you describe is alien to my experiences.

But, always a good idea to create a deal memo with a payment schedule right up front. And all the more important when working with a new client.

I should also add, that implicit "awards" are more common than not. "We want to do this" is a popular start up phrase.

Most projects outside of ad agencies will begin that way.

There was a tight turnaround and I trusted the producer.

I asked outright if we were doing the job, they didn't say "no" but upon reflection it wasn't a "yes, absolutely!" it was explicitly "we want to work with you." Since there were no obstacles -budget, schedule, approvals, higher ups -it's only reasonable to assume this is a "yes".

The mistake was in taking someone with whom I had no prior relationship at his word.

We would have done about half of the work we did to just pitch the project, so that's not really an issue.

I'm glad the project didn't happen for us. If someone can't be forthright regarding whether or not they're hiring you, there's little chance that relationship will work for either party.
